Air Quality Concern
May 8, 2024
Durham Elementary families,
We’d like to provide more information about a concerning smell that Durham Elementary staff and students noticed yesterday.
Durham Elementary School is located next to businesses that sometimes emit vapors. Because the businesses and the school building share sewer lines, the vapors can occasionally be pulled in by the school building’s air intake system.
When a similar situation occurred in 2018, TTSD worked with Clean Water Services to determine the source of the smells inside the school building. They discovered the smell was due to vapors from the shared sewer line. At the time, TTSD Building Operations adjusted the venting system, which solved the issue.
Today the Operations team spent most of the day at the school, working on solutions that will eliminate the intake of outside vapors for the long term.
In the meantime, we have shut down the outside air intake system to reduce the intake of outside vapors. This will limit the intake of fresh air to a pod of classrooms. Additionally, HEPA air purifiers will be placed throughout the building and are available for each classroom if needed.

Families will self transport.
-
Siblings will transition to Bridgeport 2025-2026 - district transportation available.
Legacy Option
Current Twality MS Students/Durham 5th graders with Twality Middle school siblings :
-
Families with students currently at Twality have the choice to continue at Twality or transition to Hazelbrook MS.
-
If a current 5th grader has an older sibling who will be enrolled at Twality MS in the 2024-2025 school year, the fifth grade student and all younger siblings will have the legacy option to attend Twality.
-
Families choosing this option will complete the In-district transfer process for enrollment into Twality.
-
The District is developing transportation support for the legacy option.
If you have questions about the transfer process, please contact Jasmine Indalecio, jindalecio@ttsd.k12.or.us or call 503-431-4003.

March 8 Boundary Update
March 8, 2024
Durham Community,
The Tigard-Tualatin School District Boundary Committee has reconvened to address overcrowding at Durham Elementary and overall student population distribution within the district.
A Durham community meeting is scheduled for March 19 from 5:30 to 6:30 PM to share information regarding a boundary update for Durham Elementary.
Boundary Process Planning for the Tigard-Tualatin School District (TTSD) from October to December 2023 involved several key steps:
October - December 2023
- Presentation to the School Board: The district boundary assessment process was presented to the school board on October 9, 2023.
- Evaluation by the Boundary Committee: The Boundary Committee began evaluating school capacity and student and staff populations across the district to determine if boundary updates would be necessary to support impacted schools.
- Engagement with Constituents: The committee met with school staff and Parent Support groups at impacted schools to share boundary update scenarios.
January 2024
- Leadership reviewed impacts to transportation and demographics, school capacity, and enrollment data to identify boundary adjustments for the 2024-2025 school year.
Priorities For Determining Boundary Updates
- Board Policy JC: School Attendance Areas
- Create and execute the process as guided by the district mission and values TTSD Strategic Plan and TTSD Equity Pillars
- Minimize the number of schools and students impacted by boundary adjustments
- Minimize changes for families who have been impacted by past boundary adjustments
- Make adjustments informed by long-term growth projections
- Consider transportation costs associated with all boundary adjustment
- Identifying and engaging families most impacted
- Guide boundary adjustments to represent inclusive, culturally diverse student populations
- Additionally, the district considered district transfer options to accommodate groups of students who wished to remain at their current school and evaluated the impact of transfer requests to and from other district schools.
We look forward to sharing how this boundary update will positively impact enrollment numbers across the district and begin the process for future boundary updates.
